While many people associate homesteading with growing food or raising livestock, the health benefits associated with this way of life extend beyond mere nutrition. In this blog post, we will explore the diverse health benefits of homesteading, encompassing physical, mental, and emotional well-being. 1. Improved Nutrition One of the most significant health benefits of homesteading is access to fresh, organic produce and meats. By cultivating your own fruits, vegetables, and herbs, you can ensure that your food is free from harmful pesticides and chemicals. Homegrown produce is often richer in nutrients and flavor, prompting healthier dietary choices. The act of gardening can reward you with a diverse array of seasonal produce, encouraging a diet high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. This focus on wholesome food can lead to improved overall health and a reduced risk of chronic diseases. For us this year, the harvest has been exceptional. My wife Penelope cans green and yellow beans, tomatoes and has canned sweet and dill relish from our bumper crop of cucumbers. We also had a nice crop of garlic, beets and squash. 2. Physical Activity Homesteading is inherently labor-intensive and provides a form of physical activity that many people overlook. Whether it’s digging in the garden, tending to animals, or maintaining your property, homesteading promotes a more active lifestyle. Regular physical activity has proven benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, enhanced muscle strength, and better weight management. Unlike conventional exercise routines, homesteading integrates physical movement into daily life, making it easier to stay active without the monotony of traditional gym workouts. For me, I have lost about 40 pounds since we moved out here from the city. There’s never any shortage of things to do but I think, more importantly, the very healthy diet has me in better shape than I have been in almost 50 years. 3. Connection to Nature Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature has numerous health benefits. Studies have shown that exposure to green spaces can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve mood. Homesteaders often immerse themselves in the rhythms of nature, tending to their gardens, observing wildlife, and appreciating the changing seasons. This connection fosters mindfulness and can be a powerful antidote to the stresses of modern life. Working outdoors not only enhances physical health but also nurtures mental well-being by promoting relaxation and an overall sense of peace. We’re surrounded by thick bush here and we take our dogs on their daily walks down the path you see below. At the top of the hill is a potato field. When the owner finishes the harvest there’s always a ton of potatoes lying around. Took four wheelbarrows out last fall after the heavy equipment left. I don’t think we’ll ever have to buy another bag of potatoes again! 😀 4. Mental Health and Well-Being Homesteading can also contribute significantly to mental health. Engaging in meaningful work, like growing food or caring for animals, creates a sense of purpose and accomplishment. The satisfaction derived from nurturing plants and providing for oneself can bolster self-esteem and reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. The practice of homesteading often fosters community engagement, as many homesteaders exchange goods, share knowledge, and participate in local farmers’ markets. This sense of community and connection can enhance emotional well-being and reduce feelings of isolation. The folks out here in western New Brunswick are very real, down-to-earth folks. The nearest village is about 15 minutes down the road and the local council hosts community breakfasts Saturday morning once a month which is really very nice! 5. Sustainability and Reduce Stress Living sustainably is a cornerstone of homesteading. By producing your own food, utilizing eco-friendly practices, and minimizing waste, you can create a lifestyle that aligns with your values and supports environmental health. Reducing reliance on industrial food systems can alleviate the stress caused by global supply chain issues and environmental concerns, providing peace of mind in knowing where your food comes from and how it’s produced. There’s really nothing quite like taking something out of your garden and having it on your plate for supper. No pesticides, no fertilizers, no GMO’s. All-natural, organic vegetables! 6. Skill Development and Resilience Homesteading requires a plethora of skills—gardening, animal husbandry, food preservation, and cooking, to name a few. Learning and honing these skills can be both empowering and enjoyable. The process of mastering new techniques fosters resilience and encourages problem-solving, essential qualities that can translate to other areas of life. The fulfillment that comes from self-teaching and the ability to adapt to challenges are vital for boosting mental fortitude. Now I’m no carpenter but I’m learning fast!
